A very fine example of the work of English genre painter George Smith depicting boy cutting wood with the help of his little sister.  Signed and dated lower right.

Condition

In very fine condition.  The canvas not lined though wax treated and conserved in recent decades.  There are a couple of very small peripheral repaired tears visible on close inspection and a tiny area of paint loss lower right.  Clean, most attractive, well framed and ready to hang.

Artist Information

George Smith entered the Royal Academy in 1845 and worked in the studio of the genre and narrative painter Charles West Cope. Smith himself focused mainly on genre painting, often involving children as seen in this example of his work exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1850. Throughout his career he exhibited 79 works at the Royal Academy, 26 at the British Institute and 15 at the Society of British Artists.
