Notes

A superb large portrait of Marie van der Crab aged 7 seated by a forest stream by Dutch portrait and landscape painter Barend Leonardus Hendriks.  The painting has a wonderful provenance having been part of the collection of Robert Zellinger de Balkany (1931-2015) a prominent Hungarian businessman and art collector and former husband of Princess Maria Gabriella of Savoy.  The painting was sold by Christie's London in 2017 and has since benefitted from a replacement frame and some professional conservation work.  Signed and dated lower left.

Condition

In very fine condition.  The canvas not lined, torn, patched or repaired.  The painting has benefitted from some professional conservation work since the Christie's sale in 2017 and with some associated re-touching.  There is some surface wear remaining as can be seen in the close up photographs.  Clean, most attractive, well framed and ready to hang.

Artist Information

Barend Leonardus Hendriks was a Dutch painter and draftsman. He also taught and collected art. Hendriks was a son of Jurrien Hendriks and Hendrina de Roos. Initially he was trained to become a house painter, just like his father. He took lessons at the Art Exercise Society and went to Brussels to study wood and marble painting. He then studied for some time at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He was a student of Simon van den Berg. From 1856 he lived in Arnhem again. He became a teacher at Kunstoefening and taught Piet Meiners, his nephews Jurrien and Elisabeth Hendriks (children of his brother, the navy painter Cornelis Hendriks) and probably Anna Abrahams.  Hendriks was mainly a portrait painter, he left behind about 300 portraits. He also painted landscapes and interiors and made lithographs.  He exhibited several times and took part in, among other things, the exhibition of Living Masters in The Hague and Amsterdam. Hendriks had an art collection, which was added to the collection of Alexander Ver Huell after his death, from which the Museum Arnhem was created. His work is also included in other museum collections, such as the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and Museum De Lakenhal.  Hendriks died at the age of 68.
