Artist Information

Pierre-Laurent Brenot, born Raymond Brenot in Paris in 1913, Pierre-Laurent Brenot was a French painter, illustrator, poster artist and fashion designer. He studied at the École Estienne in Paris before furthering his artistic training under the illustrator Fernand Hertenberger. During the 1930s and 1940s he established himself in the Parisian fashion world, producing designs for leading couturiers including Christian Dior, Jacques Fath, Balenciaga and Nina Ricci, as well as the fashion houses of Lanvin and Rochas.

From 1944 onwards, Brenot developed a successful career as an illustrator and advertising artist, becoming particularly celebrated for his glamorous illustrations of women and earning the reputation of the 'father of the French pin-up'. His commissions included posters for prestigious Parisian venues such as the Lido, Moulin Rouge and Folies Bergère. From the 1960s he increasingly devoted himself to painting, drawing inspiration from the techniques of the Old Masters. His work received considerable recognition, including a Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1966 and the Prix Henner in 1971. He died in Loches, France, in 1998.
