Artist Information

Edouard Woutermaertens was a Belgian artist born in Kortrijk in 1819 and died there in 1897. He was a painter. Older brother of Constant Woutermaertens. Education at the Academy in Kortrijk (1836-1840) and then for six years a student of the animal painter Louis Robbe. Specialized in painting scenes with sheep. Sometimes influences of C. Troyon and the Dutch masters from the 17th century are noticeable. From the press: “He excelled as a sheep painter. With those animals he admired the loose, free posture within a fence or on a stream. His flocks of sheep with shepherds always form one moving tangle with attention to the light.” Work in the museums in Kortrijk and Bruges, among others. Mentioned in the Lexicon of West Flemish visual artists II, BAS I and Two centuries of Belgian artists. Source: P. Piron, Belgian Visual Artists from the 19th to the 21st century.
