Notes

A very fine pair of 19th century Florentine copies after Grimou's originals in the Uffizi, Florence.  There are a comparable pair of copies in the British National Art Collection - see The Boy Pilgrim and The Girl Pilgrim in the collection of the National Trust - Clandon Park.

Condition

Both in very fine condition.  The canvases not lined, torn, patched or repaired.  There is fine craquelure throughout.  Clean, most attractive well framed and ready to hang.  Presented in matching Florentine frames.

Artist Information

Alexis Grimou was a French portrait painter. He worked for an elite clientele and was called the French Rembrandt as he introduced the Northern European style of portrait painting in France. Many of his intimate portraits at half-lengths were influential on the development of 18th-century portrait painting in France. Portrait painters such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Jean-Baptiste Greuze were influenced by his work.
