Follower of Tintoretto - Oil Painting

Venus - Sold

A museum standard Italian Renaissance style oil painting on canvas depicting Venus nude by a close follower of Tintoretto. The painting is a remarkably accomplished old master which is likely to have been painted by an important 16th/17th century Italian artist, probably working in Venice and following the style of the 16th century Venetian school. The painting shows the strong influence of both Tintoretto and Titian and it is likely that the present painting’s composition is based loosely on Titian’s masterpiece of circa 1520 Venus Anadyomene which now hangs in the National Gallery of Scotland. Tintoretto worked briefly in the studio of Titian and his artistic development owed much to the influence of Titian, although clearly by a master hand it is likely that the present painting is by a lesser known master than Titian or Tintoretto although the attribution to Tintoretto is clearly an early one with the plaque having long been in place on the magnificent carved wood frame. A wonderful ready to hang old master oil painting that would not look out of place in the National Gallery.
