Travellers on a Rural Track - Sold

A very fine mid 17th century Dutch oil painting on panel depicting travellers in a landscape, by or from the close circle of Philips Wouwerman.  The composition of the painting is simply first class with many layers of detail and every aspect exquisitely rendered.  The overall handling and subject of the panel is certainly comparable to the hand of Philips Wouwerman.  The compositional type with the hill receding on the diagonal and serving as a repoussoir draws parallels with other Wouwerman panels. Although a great number of Dutch landscape painters were active in this genre the handling shows a similar vigour and spirit to Wouwerman's work.  The painting has provenance with Frost & Reed according to an original Frost & Reed  label verso - we have spoken to Frost & Reed and unfortunately they no longer have the records for this period in their history (the label is dated 6/9/68), a pencil inscription on the label suggests that it was sold to a Brigadier C. Sparrow however this is unconfirmed.  There are two indistinct wax collectors stamps verso.
