Travellers by a Scottish Loch - Sold

Travellers by a Scottish Loch - Sold

A very fine oil painting on canvas depicting travellers on a path in an expansive mountainous landscape which is possibly an early painting by John Linnell.  Linnell is recorded as having visited Scotland only once  in 1817, he is recorded as having produced many sketches of the lochs and landscapes of Scotland and it is possible that this painting was produced from these sketches shortly after his return to London.  The painting certainly dates to the early part of the 19th century and is consistent with Linnell's early work.  The painting is signed with initials lower left, the initials are a good match for Linnell's recorded monogram (see Monograms of Victorian & Edwardian Artists by Peter Nahum, Victoria Square Press, page 160), the initials have been fully examined under ultra violet and are original to the painting and have not been added at a later date.
