The Penitent Magdalene - Sold

Late 17th/Early 18th Century Italian School - Sold

The Penitent Magdalene - Sold

A museum standard Italian Baroque style oil painting on canvas depicting Mary Magdalene nude and in penance.  The painting is a remarkably accomplished old master which is likely to have been painted by an important late 17th/early 18th century Italian artist, probably working in Bologna and following the style of the 17th century Bolognese School.  The composition of the present lot is derived from il Guercino's lost original, known from a record in the Farnese archive and is an extremely fine and important early record of that lost original.  The painting with an indistinct signature or inscription verso, this appears to read 'E Sir...' which is probably an early attribution to Elisabetta Sirani, an Italian Baroque painter also of the Bolognese School.  A wonderful ready to hang old master oil painting.
