Elizabeth of York - Sold

circle of Michael Dahl (1659 – 1743) - Sold

Elizabeth of York - Sold

An extremely fine early 18th century bust length portrait of a Elizabeth of York in a feigned oval.  The sitter's features and clothing are exquisitely rendered and are clearly the work of a major hand - the face with all the elements associated with Dahl - the almond eyes and the soft complexion.  The composition of the painting is based loosely on the late 16th century original by an unknown artist in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG 311) - this portrait is also though to be the inspiration for the Queen of Hearts image in playing cards.
