Peasants Playing Backgammon - Sold

circle of David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) - Sold

Peasants Playing Backgammon - Sold

The composition of the present lot is closely related to Tenier's painting of 1641 which was formerly in the Kaiser-Friedrich Museum, Berlin, until destroyed in World War II (see H. Posse, Die Gemäldegalerie des Kaiser-Friedrich-Museums. Vollständiger beschreibender Katalog nit Abbildungen sämtlicher Gemälde, Berlin, 1911, I, p. 376, no. 856, illustrated). This version departs from the original in several details.  Most noticeably, the dog on the far right is here omitted as is the pipe lying on the floor by the stoneware jug. A number of other versions are known, including the pictures sold, Lempertz, Cologne, 19 November 1960, lot 462; in the Städtische Sammlungen, Freiburg, in the Kodella sale, Fischer, Lucerne, 29 August -1 September 1934, lot 1932; in the sale of Pictures and Watercolours from Longleat, Christie's, London, 14th June 2002, lot 615.

Price: Sold for £3,564 in a no reserve eBay sale on 24th November 2013
