Children Resting on a Rural Track - Sold

attributed to William E.D. Stuart (British, 1827–1858) - Sold

Children Resting on a Rural Track - Sold

An extremely fine mid 19th century oil painting on canvas depicting children resting on a rural track with a caravan of travellers beyond.  The painting is signed 'W. Stuart Jun P.' lower left.  The painting is probably a rare early example of the work of William E.D. Stuart (1827–1858), an artist better known for his marine paintings and still lifes and whose later work is generally signed 'W.E.D. Stuart' to distinguish him from his father William Stuart who was also an artist.  The painting has a wonderful provenance having been with both Christie's and Agnew's in the past and with it's original Christie's stencil and Agnew's gallery labels verso.  A superb early landscape painting which would doubtless benefit from further research.  Signed and dated lower left.
